The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is the oldest university in Western Europe. It has 11 Schools, 33 Departments and around 87,000 students. The University has 7 Interdepartmental Centers dedicated to industrial research contributing to the High Technology Network of Emilia-Romagna; Integrated Research Teams (IRTs) as multidisciplinary research and innovative teams with the aim of coordinating the expertise of the University in a specific research area transversal to several research sectors.

In particular, Professor Contin leads an interdisciplinary research team aimed at the integration and exchange of expertise of the University in the fields of energy efficiency and the reduction of CO2 emissions. Activities related to European funding programs are supported by the European Research and Innovation Office, with more than 10 years experience on European projects.

Prof. Andrea Contin is affiliated to the Department of Physics and Astronomy. His scientific research in Elementary Particle Physics started in 1977. Prof. Contin has produced more than 400 peer reviewed papers. Since 2001, Prof. Contin has been leading the Environmental Management Research Group of the Interdepartmental Center for Research in Environmental Science, with the goal to apply and develop Environmental Management Systems, Environmental Information Systems, Environmental Reports and Analyses and Environmental Communication methods.

The NET-Fuels team at the project kick-off meeting in Ravenna

  • About: The University of Bologna (UNIBO), founded in 1088, is the oldest university in Western Europe. It has 11 Schools, 33 Departments and around 87,000 students. The University has 7 Interdepartmental Centers dedicated to industrial research contributing to the High Technology Network of Emilia-Romagna; Integrated Research Teams (IRTs) as multidisciplinary research and innovative teams with the aim of coordinating the expertise of the University in a specific research area transversal to several research sectors.
  • Role in Project: UNIBO is the coordinator of NET-Fuels and is responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of the project. Alongside its coordination duties, UNIBO will apply its knowledge and skills on model development and regulatory frameworks, making use of advanced system dynamics software (Vensim). UNIBO will also support the design of the NET-Fuels system through sustainability analysis and the assessment of the quality of the products in terms of GHGs emissions. Finally, UNIBO will be the Risk Manager of NET-Fuels.

  • About: Fraunhofer is the largest research organization in Europe. They are the founders of the TCR technology in this project. They have significant expertise in designing and building operational demonstrator plants and carry out research across the whole spectrum of TRL levels. The institute at Sulzbach Rosenberg in led by Dirtector Prof. Matthias Franke. His main areas of work include the development of waste management and resource strategies as well as the energetic and material recycling of waste and residues.
  • Role in Project: In NET-Fuels, Fraunhofer will apply its knowledge and skills on Research & Development and advanced thermochemical processing of biomasses, integrating the PSA and Oxy-combustion units, the gas cleaning system, and constructing and commissioning the pilot plant. Moreover, Fraunhofer will provide for feedstock supply, pre-treatment and characterization, and will analyse the quality of the products.

  • About: LEITAT is a non-profit Spanish Research Technology Organisation (RTO) recognised by the Catalan Government and by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. With a history of more than 100 years, LEITAT develops R & D activities in the areas of materials sciences, environment, surface treatments, biotechnologies and renewable energies with deep knowledge and experience in technological transfer to several industrial sectors. LEITAT takes part each year in many projects financed by the regional and national governments, participates in projects co-funded by the European Commission, and develops private R & D projects funded by industrial partners.
  • Role in Project: In NET-Fuels, LEITAT will apply its knowledge and skills on bio-electrochemical system development, electrochemistry, microbiology analysis and engineering. LEITAT will use its laboratory infrastructure to run BEM reactors (potentiostat, gas lines, analytical equipment for gas fuels characterization, etc.). LEITAT's role in the project concerns the BEM process development and the BEM pilot plant construction and commissioning.

  • About: The Silesian University of Technology (Polish name: Politechnika Śląska; Polish pronunciation: [pɔliˈtɛxɲika ˈɕlɔ̃ska]) is a university located in the Polish province of Silesia, with most of its facilities in the city of Gliwice. It was founded in 1945 by Polish professors of the Lwow Polytechnic, who were forced to leave their native city and move to the Recovered Territories (see also Kresy). In 2021, the prestigious Perspektywy Foundation ranked it as 6th best University of Technology in Poland and 13th overall.
  • Role in Project: SUT has a recognised experience in modelling of heat production via combustion and in Life Cycle Analysis. SUT has the skills and software programs to develop a CFD model of the TCR and oxy-combustion processes and of the heat transfer from oxy-combustion to TCR. SUT will also produce the Life Cycle Analysis of the entire system.

  • About: The Ithaka Institute is an international network for carbon strategies and climate farming. It develops methods to use plants to withdraw CO2 from the atmosphere and permanently store carbon in materials and agricultural soils. The institute is known for its expertise in the production, characterization, certification and application of biochar. It has put the world's first carbon sink certification system (EBC) into practice. It also develops new materials based on biochar for the construction, plastics and textile industries.
  • Role in Project: Ithaka's role in NET-Fuels includes the TCR-char characterization, application in the soil as amendment, and carbon sink certification (see https://www.european-biochar.org/en/ct/1).

  • About: RI REACH Innovation GmbH is an SME located in Austria (Graz) that supports international research and development projects, with competent and efficient services for Research, Education, Development & Innovation projects, including: Research Data Management; Impact and Competitive Market Analysis; Business Development Plan; Communication and Dissemination of Results; Community-building and Networking engagement; Quality Assurance of Deliverables and Publications; as well as Intellectual Property and Results Exploitation Management. REACH assists project partners and stakeholders in various exploitation activities of deployable products, procedures, as well as in development of appropriate platforms and networks, including use-cases management and their showcasing via proper simulation platform.
  • Role in Project: REACH will count with its experienced professionals and project know-how for delivering the market analysis and strategic exploitation tasks, and to develop a business potential roadmap and business plans for NET-Fuels. REACH also takes the Data Manager role of NET-Fuels.

  • About: WRG Europe Ltd is an SME that delivers 3 primary services; research facilitation and support, training and knowledge transfer implementation, and outreach and public engagement with science and technology. WRG Europe has an extensive client base across the UK and Europe comprising a large number of universities, and research institutes as well as industrial firms, ranging from small SME’s to major international companies. Since 1990 personnel have worked very closely with many major universities within the UK and Europe and have been associated with over 30 FP7 active research programmes as well as research training programmes such as Marie Curie Training Networks.
  • Role in Project: In NET-Fuels, WRG is the primary lead for all communication and dissemination activities with the support of REACH. WRG will be the Communication Manager of NET-Fuels.
